Summary

  • I am a clinician in private practice with an international reputation for writing and lecturing on diabetes, having authored more than 450 articles. I am Clinical Professor at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and Editor of the Journal of Diabetes. I served on the Board of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, the Journals Managing Subcommittee of the Endocrine Society, and the Editorial Board of Diabetes Care, and was principal investigator in numerous studies. In 2012, I was awarded the title of Master of the American College of Endocrinology. I have been listed for many years in the “Castle Connolly Guide: The Best Doctors New York Metro Area.”

My interests span the overall field of diabetes. I have carefully followed the development of therapeutic approaches over the past two decades, and for many years wrote a renowned monthly commentary in Diabetes Care, entitled "Perspectives on the News," focusing on this and other aspects of clinical care. Currently, as the Editor of the Journal of Diabetes, I write frequent commentaries spanning various aspects of treatment. I am interested in the epidemiology of diabetes with particular focus on cardiovascular disease, and have paid particular attention to questions of cardiovascular safety and, even more important, to the potential for cardiovascular benefit of diabetes treatment. I have written on the inapplicability of current FDA recommendations for cardiovascular outcomes to the crucial questions we wish to examine in determining optimal therapeutic approaches. I also am a frequent commentator on novel treatment approaches including insulin treatment modalities, incretin-based treatments, and inhibitors of glucose transport aimed at increasing urinary glucose loss.
