Prior to that he earned his MD degree from Addis Ababa (Haile Selassie) University then worked as General medical practitioner for 2 years in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Following his trainings in residency and fellowship, in 2000, Dr Geda became a full time faculty at Mayo Clinic. In 2014, Dr Geda became the first physician at Mayo Clinic to have an academic rank of full Professor in both fields of Neurology and Psychiatry. After 20 years of serving as full time faculty at Mayo clinic then in 2020, Dr Geda made a vertical career move as Professor and Program Director of the Behavioral Neurology and Neuropsychiatry Fellowship Program in the Department of Neurology at Barrow Neurological Institute, Phoenix, Arizona, USA. Since July of 2020, Dr Geda has become Research Professor, Center for Biosensors and Bioelectronics, Arizona State University.
Dr Geda has authored over 175 peer reviewed scientific publications including in prestigious journals such as JAMA Psychiatry, JAMA Neurology, American Journal of Psychiatry, Neurology etc. Dr Geda is the lead author of the international panel that developed the neurobiological model to investigate neuropsychiatric symptoms in Alzheimer's Disease. (Geda et al. Alzheimer's & Dementia. 2013). Professor Yonas Geda is a globally recognized influential expert in the field of neuropsychiatry, brain aging, Alzheimer's disease and related disorders as evidenced by 10220 citations of his work and an h-index of 53 (Geda Y.E. SCOPUS report. February 25, 2021).
