Summary
- Yoel Sadovsky received his MD degree from the Hebrew University in 1986, followed by OBGYN residency at Washington University and maternal-fetal medicine and postdoctoral research fellowships at UCSF. He then returned to Washington University and served as Director, Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Ultrasound between 1999-2007. In 2007, he assumed Directorship of Magee-Womens Research Institute (MWRI) at the University of Pittsburgh, and Vice Chair (Research), Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences.
Building on his clinical expertise in maternal-fetal medicine, Dr. Sadovsky seeks to decipher molecular processes underlying placental development and function, and their impact on early human development. His research integrates molecular and informatics tools to decipher trophoblast adaption to cellular injury. A primary focus is the function of trophoblast-specific microRNAs and other ncRNAs, which are packaged in extracellular vesicles and communicate genomic material among the fetal, placental, and maternal compartments. Dr. Sadovsky also interrogates trophoblast utilization of lipidic fuels, and the role of phospholipids in placental injury. His investigation has resulted in the publication of more than 190 peer-reviewed articles as well as chapters and reviews. He is the Associate Dean for Women’s Health Research and Reproductive Sciences at the Univ. of Pittsburgh, and in 2015 was honored by the University as a Distinguished Professor in OBGYN and Reproductive Sciences.
Dr. Sadovsky has served on several NIH study sections, the NICHD Division of Intramural Research 2013 Review Panel, chaired the NICHD Maternal-Fetal Biology Research Study Section, and the NICHD Genomic and Proteomic Network for Preterm Birth Research steering committee. He has served as a member of the Advisory Council for NICHD and March of Dimes, and the NICHD Board of Scientific Directors, and this year appointed to the NIH’s Advisory Committee on Research on
