Summary

  • Treatment of surgical and medical diseases of the retina and vitreous (posterior segment of the eye); Laboratory and clinical research to develop new treatments for retinal disorders and vision loss.

I enjoy working with my colleagues in the region as a referral surgeon treating patients with complex vitreoretinal conditions that require advanced surgical techniques or the technical scope and resources of a university-based practice. I have extensive experience in the treatment of complex diabetic eye disease, advanced macular surgery, complications of retinal detachment, and combined surgery of the anterior- and posterior segments including a variety of techniques for intraocular lens fixation.

Translational investigations comprise the focus of my research group, directed toward three principal areas: 1) Development of a platform for Image-Guided Ophthalmic Microsurgery using artificial intelligence-based methodologies to inform surgical decision making 2) Harnessing and developing tools for Surgical Data Science in pursuit of advances in microsurgical efficacy, safety, and surgical eduction/advancement. The development and application of automated tools to quantitatively assess microsurgical performance and learning are of particular interest 3) Clinical research primarily directed toward the effectiveness of a variety of ophthalmic surgical interventions in diseases of the retina and vitreous.
