Summary
- William A. Zoghbi is the Elkins Family Distinguished Chair in Cardiac Health, Chairman of the Department of Cardiology at The Houston Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center and Professor of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College and the Institute of Academic Medicine.
Dr. Zoghbi is a renowned leader in cardiology, echocardiography, and cardiac imaging. He has developed new techniques to evaluate heart function and valve disorders without resorting to invasive procedures. These accomplishments led him to preside over the development of national and international guidelines for evaluating heart valves. He is known for his research on ischemic heart disease, myocardial function and hibernation, and for developing echocardiographic techniques to evaluate valvular dynamics and measure valvular regurgitation. Dr. Zoghbi has authored more than 300 original publications and has been invited to lecture on his work at every major cardiology conference around the globe.
Always looking forward, Dr. Zoghbi is dedicated to cardiovascular education. He is a much sought-after mentor and has trained over 100 cardiology fellows in advanced cardiovascular imaging. Many of his former students now hold leadership positions worldwide. Dr. Zoghbi’s commitment to physician training and education is evident at the national level: In 2004, the American Society of Echocardiography presented him with the Richard Popp Excellence in Teaching Award. Moreover, he co-chaired the American College of Cardiology committee that wrote a monograph on how best to train the new generation of cardiologists in cardiovascular imaging.
As an advocate for scientific communication, Dr. Zoghbi lends his expertise to several journals. He has served as associate editor of Circulation and is currently a senior editor of JACC Cardiovascular Imaging, the global health section editor for the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, and an editorial board member of Global Heart.
