Summary

  • I have been a neurosurgeon, specializing in complex spinal surgery, since finishing training in 1993. I was Co-Director of the Neurospinal Disorders Program in the Department of Neurosurgery at UC San Francisco where I also cofounded the Spine Biomechanics Laboratory at UC Berkeley with Dr. Tony Keaveny. I have extensive experience in consulting in the musculoskeletal industry, ranging from small startups to large companies, and founded the Center for the Relief of Pain, treating complex pain problems with innovative surgical solutions. I am currently seeing patients, specializing in complex spinal surgery as well as chronic and cancer-related pain, at Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph, Missouri and, in my capacity as Medical Director of Neurosurgery, helping to build a comprehensive neurosurgical service.

In early stage industry, I cofounded OsteoGeneX, a biotech startup focused on novel ways of building new bone through small molecule development, with Dr. Debra Ellies and served as its first Chief Medical Officer. More recently, I have taken the position of Chief Medical Officer with Equanimity-AI, cofounded by Erez Levanon and Sam Hazak, a startup that has produced an AI-based software system for continuous, semi-automated assessment and monitoring of chronic pain, for the first time bringing the biopsychosocial model of chronic pain into practical clinical use.
