Summary
- After completing Family Medicine residency in 1973, I practiced for a year as the medical director of Westside Health Services in Rochester. It was during the turbulent Nixon years, and I found myself deeply embroiled as a left-wing professional and hippie motorcycle rider before coming to my senses and allowing the God of the universe continuous access to clean up my very messy personal life. Following a full “reboot” I remarried, spent a year as an industrial physician, re-embarked on my career as an inner city physician called to serve the less fortunate, and helped raise our 4 children into successful adulthood.
What started in 1978 as a struggling faith-based solo practice on Rochester’s west side has grown over the years into a multi-site Federally Qualified Health Center known as His Branches Health Services. Our offices also house and back up three crisis pregnancy centers locally, and do a fair amount of community and youth outreach.
Having a solid organization with a full team allowed me to complete a 5-year plan to retire in July 2018 after 45 years in practice with all of my preceptorship, leadership, and service responsibilities covered by others who are more qualified than I to carry the work to the next level.
Now that I've "graduated" into retirement, Susan and I are finding more time for each other and our 4 married offspring, 8 grand-kids, and extended family, as well as for study and outdoor recreational activities like canoeing, camping, photography, and skiing. We're active in our local church and the broader community and continue to serve as advisers to the URMC Christian Fellowship. I’ve done some international missions work and am supportive of others who are active in missions.
My heart has been drawn in study into the deep subjects of the kingdom of God and discipleship that were at the core of Jesus' message and ministry, and I would love to hear from any colleagues who might have constructive insights and input along the way.
