- Dr. Wm. Andrew Heaton is retired & resides in Portugal after concluding as Scientific Advisor to Secure Transfusion Technology, as well as HeatonDx, a consulting LLP. Over 8 years he consulted for Immunetics Inc, Seres Therapeutics, and LightIntegra Inc, later as a board member. From 2009-15 as system head of Transfusion Services at Northwell Health System Hospitals, he created a 5 MD team, providing leadership to complex new blood product centric services, blood use programs, and launch of a blood product testing laboratory. Teaching included a joint fellowship training program with the New York Blood Center, and initiation of massive transfusion to support two Level I trauma center approvals. The Blood Component Product Research Laboratory at the Feinstein Institute focused on Platelet Quality including Bacterial Assay development, Platelet Activation Screening, & Platelet Additive Solutions. Prior to Northwell he had been Director of Cell Therapy at the National Cord Blood Program.
Previously Chief Medical Officer for Novartis Diagnostics (Chiron Corporation) responsible for Clinical, Regulatory, Scientific Affairs, and Alliance Management. In this role he oversaw a global series of workshops, and scientific advisory committees, in support of worldwide NAT testing implementation. During this period three NAT blood screening tests received approval, and he provided senior MD support for new alliance developments in bacterial screening assays, and Prion test development. Prior to Chiron, he had served as Chief Medical Officer of Vitalant Inc. University titles include Professor of Pathology at Hofstra NSLIJ Medical School, & University of California, San Francisco.
During his previous 15 years, as head of the American Red Cross (ARC) Blood Service in Norfolk Virginia, he was the lead Clinical Investigator for the approval of AS-1, AS-3LR, and AS-5 R
