Summary

  • In addition to his many personal scientific and clinical contributions to nephrology, Dr. Couser’s career contributions include the establishment of one of the first university-based nephrology programs in the US (University of Washington, Seattle, WA) that focused on the study of mechanisms of renal disease rather than renal physiology or dialysis. As a program director and clinical and scientific mentor, he trained over 60 fellows between 1976 and 2004. Of the 25 fellows from 6 countries trained in his own laboratory, 18 pursued distinguished academic careers. Eleven became Division Heads in Nephrology at 12 different medical schools in 5 countries including 7 in the US, 2 in Germany, and one each in China and Thailand. One also became a Chairman of Medicine, dean and vice-dean of large medical schools and two became presidents of national nephrology societies. In 2013 David Salant, a trainee with Dr. Couser in 1976-80, was the recipient of both the Jean Hamburger Award from the International Society of Nephrology and the John Peters Award from the American Society of Nephrology for his work on the pathogenesis of human membranous nephropathy which began during his research fellowship in Dr. Couser’s laboratory.
