Summary
- Dr. Vinod (“Vinny”) Voleti returned to the northeast to join NJ Retina in 2013. He grew up in upstate New York and attended Union College, where he graduated summa cum laude and was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa society. During his free time, he volunteered as a firefighter/EMT and established the college’s first on-campus EMS service. Dr. Voleti also ambitiously pursued a second degree- an MBA in Health Systems Administration, which gives him a unique perspective on today’s healthcare issues. Upon graduation, he was admitted to Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons, where he earned his medical degree and discovered his passion for ophthalmology.
As a medical student at Columbia, Dr. Voleti received the Leib Memorial Prize, which recognizes an outstanding graduate student pursuing the field of ophthalmology and matched to remain at Columbia for his residency training. During his residency, he received awards from Columbia and New York Presbyterian Hospital for both his teaching and research activities and was selected to serve as chief resident in his final year. He then went on to complete a two-year vitreoretinal fellowship at the prestigious Jules Stein Eye Institute, where he treated patients and taught residents at multiple medical centers, including UCLA- Ronald Reagan Medical Center, the West Los Angeles Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center, and the Los Angeles County hospital system.
Along with his training, Dr. Voleti researched, published, and presented at national meetings on numerous topics in ophthalmology, including diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, retinal detachment, macular degeneration, retinopathy of prematurity, tumors of the eye, hereditary retinal dystrophies, and novel vitrectomy techniques. He was also included as a co-investigator on a number of clinical trials studying dry and wet macular degeneration, stem cell treatment, and retinal vascular diseases.
