Summary
- Urooj Yazdani holds an M.D. from the Chicago Medical School and an M.Ed. from the Johns Hopkins University School of Education. Urooj is currently completing her training in adult psychiatry at the University of Louisville School of Medicine and is pursuing a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry.
While in graduate school, she formulated a thesis on gender disparity in the developing world, specifically the socioeconomic circumstances that prevent women from attaining higher education in rural Pakistani societies and the cycle of trauma that ensues thereafter. Her research was presented at academic institutions around the country, including the Harvard University School of Education, the Teachers College at Columbia University, and the Northwestern University School of Education.
Her work on analyzing the link between systemic poverty and generational trauma was later transformed into a feature documentary film, titled 'A Destruction'. The film was created with the support of the Johns Hopkins University School of Education, the Indus Resource Centre and the Kartemquin Films Diverse Voices in Documentary Program. The film was developed by the Tribeca Film Institute, debuted in July of 2019 and is currently being shown at film festivals across the country. It has been contracted for international broadcast distribution through Filmoption International and educational distribution through InfoBase Learning and Alexander Street/Proquest Films. It is set to debut on television networks around the globe as well as public classrooms, libraries and universities across the country.
Through her unique skill set, Urooj hopes to be an influence on how to make the public invested in complex psychodynamic issues such as generational trauma, gender biases, and displacement in immigrant communities. She aspires to utilize her skills in media literacy, her expertise in storytelling and her passion for advocacy for the betterment of the psychiatric community.
