Summary

  • I am an emergency medicine with over 42 years of clinical, educational, administrative, and research experience in the provision of emergency medical care, with venues ranging from remote rural, to suburban community, and large urban academic hospital facilities. Starting as a director fresh out of a rotating internship at Lee County Community Hospital with one physician partner, we expanded the strictly after hours practice from a single bed ER to a 6 bed ED with 24/7 coverage, prior to going back to EM residency training 3 years later. I subsequently trained at Overlook and Morristown Memorial Hospitals in northern New Jersey at a time when private physician practices and their expectations required nuancing, finesse and understanding of their patients and providers. I then completed a fellowship in Pediatric EM, and stayed on as the director of the SUNY Syracuse Children’s ER, prior to becoming interim chair and then leaving for Birmingham, Alabama. I have been involved in transformational and innovative leadership in academic EM, clinical resuscitation societies, clinical research, emergency/disaster preparedness, national clinical trials groups, multidisciplinary clinical and research engagement, and leading four different academic Departments of EM (DEM). I have been fortunate to be an award winning teacher, researcher, administrative leader, and sought after mentor. As a clinical trialist (NETT, SIREN, PETAL, VICTAS, etc), medical simulationist, and providing patient care and bedside teaching. I remain clinically active 7 days a week, providing urgent care telehealth services in several states.
