Summary
- Dr. Perez is a board-certified surgeon specializing in gastrointestinal and advanced laparoscopic surgery. He has been in practice in Albuquerque for over 20 years. During his residency at the University of New Mexico he was mentored by some of the pioneers of laparoscopic surgery. He recognized its revolutionary benefit for his patient’s recovery and it has been his professional passion ever since to perfect these minimally invasive techniques. Prior to joining Lovelace, Dr. Perez was the Director of Minimally Invasive General Surgery at the University of New Mexico for 6 years. While at UNM, he was recognized for his teaching of laparoscopic techniques to a new generation of surgeons.
More than a professional calling, being a surgeon is a family tradition. His father, Jose, immigrated from Bolivia in 1950 and practiced general surgery for nearly 50 years. He was an excellent role model for taking great care of his patients and meticulous surgical technique. From his father, this Dr. Perez understands that the well being of his patients is the primary inspiration for his calling.
Dr Perez was a second-year resident in 1991 when the first laparoscopic gallbladder surgeries were performed at the University of New Mexico. In 2000 he was instrumental in championing the first specialized laparoscopic operating suites in New Mexico. Since then he has become recognized state-wide for performing such complex laparoscopic surgeries as:
• Repair of hiatal hernia
• Surgical treatment of acid reflux
• Surgical treatment for achalasia
• Colon removal for cancer and diverticulitis
• Removal of bile duct stones
• Removal of spleen
