- Dr. Tom Peters is Professor of Surgery, Emeritus, University of Florida College of Medicine, Jacksonville, and has held the rank of Professor, Uniformed Services University School of Medicine for four decades. A graduate of Miami University (OH) and University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, he trained in general surgery, Medical College of Wisconsin, where he was an American Cancer Society Clinical Fellow, and Organ Transplant Surgery, University of Colorado. Dr. Peters performed the first organ transplant in Jacksonville (1989) and was the founding Director, Jacksonville Transplant Center, and Department of Surgery Chair at Methodist Medical Center. In 2010 he received an endowed professorship, The Methodist Medical Center Professor of Surgery at the University of Florida. Dr. Peters has published over 600 scientific, educational, and professional papers, abstracts, or book chapters, and has more than 350 scientific and educational presentations in America and abroad. He has held editorial or review appointments at 20 national publications including JAMA, American Journal of Transplantation, American Journal of Kidney Diseases, and Military Medicine. In 2006, he received a gubernatorial appointment to the Florida Board of Medicine. Organized medicine service includes President, Duval County Medical Society (2002) and its Delegate to the Florida Medical Association, the Florida Delegation to the AMA, AMA Delegate for the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, and numerous positions in transplant, professional, and community volunteer organizations as a committee chair, officer, advisor, or director. Colonel Peters had over three decades of commissioned US Army service, three active-duty wartime tours overseas or at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center serving as an Army Flight Surgeon, Paratrooper, and MASH Chief of Surgery. Tom and Ruby Peters enjoy their four children and 13 grandchildren, all living in Jacksonville.
