Summary

  • My career began with primary care in a Federally-qualified rural health center in North Carolina and has progressed to include emergency medicine, and then critical care at the Cleveland Clinic and Baystate Medical Center (BMC). Along the way, I championed EMR deployment leading to a leadership position in medical informatics. I have served as interim chairman and then Vice-Chairman of Medicine at Baystate Medical Center, and then interim president and CEO at BFMC. My research interests center around severity-of-illness scoring, sepsis pharmacotherapy, and process improvement. I am involved in graduate medical education and physician leadership education and have co-authored two critical care textbooks plus 130 peer-reviewed publications, including the widely-cited Mortality Probability Model (MPM0-III) and a severity score for cardiac surgery.
