  • Dr. King is Dean of the School of Medicine and Vice Chancellor-Medical Affairs at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).

    Dr. King held the Julius R. Krevans Distinguished Professorship in Internal Medicine and was Chair of the Department of Medicine at UCSF. Prior to his appointment at UCSF, Dr. King was Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He is a member of the National Academy Medicine (formerly the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences), the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Association of American Physicians, the American Clinical and Climatological Association and the Fleischner Society. He is a Master of the American College of Physicians and a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the National Committee for Quality Assurance; Board of Trustees of Gustavus Adolphus College; and Scientific Advisory Council, Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. He has served on the Advisory Council of the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute; Lung Biology and Pathology Study Section of the NIH; Pulmonary and Allergy Drugs Advisory Committee Center for Drug Evaluation & Research of the FDA; NIH Advisory Board for Clinical Research and the Board of Extramural Advisors of the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute. He is a past president of the American Thoracic Society (ATS) and Secretary/Treasurer of the American Board of Internal Medicine. His research interest is the pathogenesis, diagnosis and management of inflammatory and immunologic lung injury. His bibliography comprises more than 300 publications. He has co-edited 15 books, including the acclaimed reference books: Interstitial Lung Disease, (now in 5th edition); and Murray & Nadel’s Textbook of Respiratory Medicine (now in 7th ed. In press). He co-edited Medical Management of Vulnerable & Underserved Patients: Principles, Practice, Population (now in 2nd edition).
