After graduating from the University of Missouri School of Medicine in 1992, he traveled to Virginia to complete his residency in General Surgery at the Carilion Clinic. He entered private practice in 1997 and spent the next 25 years in the Charlotte, North Carolina area where he and his partners built one of the largest private general surgery practices in the Southeast. In 2023, he and his wife decided to relocate to the South Carolina Low Country, where he joined Southern Surgical Specialists.
Dr. Thies offers expertise in hernia surgery, including abdominal wall reconstruction, gallbladder and biliary disease, pancreatic disease, gastrointestinal disorders, reflux disease, diverticulitis, colon cancer, soft tissue masses and skin cancer. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Hernia Society. Among his publications, a notable contribution is his research on thromboxane receptor blockade's effects on acute lung injury, published in The Annals of Thoracic Surgery.
