Summary
- I am a Board-certified psychiatrist specializing in primary care psychiatry and psychopharmacology. After undergraduate studies at Cornell and medical school at Columbia University, I completed my training at McLean and Massachusetts General Hospitals in Boston. Following residency, I completed a post-doctoral fellowship in psychosomatic medicine and biobehavioral research, and then worked at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) as the associate director of the psychiatry consultation service. At BIDMC, I also was the director of medical student education in psychiatry.
In 1995, I became the Chief of Behavioral Medicine at Harvard Pilgrim Health care, later Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates. Beginning in 2000, I began a consulting practice, working in the field of disease management and population health, working to integrate the detection and treatment of depression into primary care practice, while growing my private practice.
I have been on the staff at both BIDMC and MGH and have been an associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. In 2004, I served as president of the American Psychosomatic Society and am active in a number of professional and academic organizations. I have published five books and 40 papers in the field of behavioral medicine. In 2017 I was elected to be a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Society.
