Summary

  • I have done aging research and practiced geriatrics, but for 20 years I found myself doing experimental resuscitation and cooling physiology in dogs. I retired from this in 2021.

I ran an institution where we did liquid lavage of the lungs in dogs, with fluorocarbons (which don't mix with water, but you cannot drown in them as they carry oxygen and CO2). Not only does this potentially wash out edema, blood, mucus, smoke, and drowning fluid (fresh or salt water), but (if you use warm or cold liquid) it can also cool and warm as fast as heart-lung bypass (1 C per minute for the brain). It can be used along with a normal gas ventilator.

We can induce mild hypothermia of the brain (-4 C or -7 F from normal) in anesthetized dogs in 5 minutes, and all it requires is intubation. Within a few hours they are up and walking, and they do fine. This is part of the future in medicine-- I think we will see it long before total liquid ventilation, where the lungs are entirely full of fluorocarbon. There is no reason for that but deep diving.
