Summary
- Dr. Shelby Burks grew up in Orlando, Florida. He attended Rollins College graduating with magna cum laude distinction in Biology. After college he was offered a scholarship at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine where he subsequently graduated with AOA honors distinction.
As a first year medical student he developed an early interest in Neurosurgery.
His research interests include peripheral nerve repair, degenerative spinal column disease, minimally invasive spine surgery, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, and stem cell transplantation techniques, among others. He has three articles featured on the covers of the Journal of Neurosurgery and over 50 peer-reviewed publications and numerous book chapters. Dr. Burks has several grants from federal, industry, and charitable funding sources. He actively participates in translational and clinical studies. During training Dr. Burks completed fellowship in complex spine and peripheral nerve surgery.
His interests outside of medicine include interests include film, Miami cultural events, healthcare policy, and travel.
