Summary
- Dr. Sophia Mirviss is a family physician in Berkeley, CA since October 2019. After completing her residency from UCSF/San Francisco General in 1992 she was an owner/physician in a independent family medicine group for over 25 years in San Francisco. Dr. Mirviss is a graduate of Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and completed her residency at San Francisco General Hospital/ UCSF Family and Community Medicine Residency Program. Dr. Mirviss has focused on women's health care, including non-operative gyn, thyroid disorders, migraines, mood disorders and menopause, as well as health and aging. In her Berkeley practice, she is focusing on geriatric medicine as many of her patients are 75 years old and beyond. Dr. Mirviss enjoys working with the older patients, many of whom are very accomplished. This newer practice with the focus on geriatric medicine has been a circle back to her early days of medicine when she was a Medical Director in an Adult Day Health Care center in San Francisco.
Dr. Mirviss enjoys using her skills in minor dermatologic procedures, IUD placement and removal, and Nexplanon insertion and removal (certified). In 2009, Dr. Mirviss conceived of, developed the business plan for and implemented the ongoing "Pacific Family After Hours Clinic" which offered urgent, after hours medical care to patients and non-patients during after-work evenings and Saturdays. The After Hours Clinic was very successful until being closed when Dr. Mirviss relocated to Berkeley in 2019.
Dr. Mirviss practices medicine with an open heart; she is interested in the whole person- their work, their families of origin and choice, their current and former struggles with emotional and physical distress. Dr. Mirviss practices to stay present with each person so that healing can be a part of her doctoring process. She believes practicing medicine, especially primary care, is a calling and must be nutured by our own spiritual practices as well as our own self-care.
