Summary

  • My name is Shanté (SHAHN-tay ) Jackson-Barnes (she/her/hers). I graduated from Florida State University with both a Bachelor of Science in psychology and a Bachelor of Science in criminology. After graduation, I spent three years working at Coastal State Prison in Savannah, GA as a correctional officer before being promoted to correctional sergeant. It was my time spent working in the prison sector that shaped many of my interests within psychiatry today. In 2019, I matriculated to Virginia Commonwealth University’s (VCU) School of Medicine where I grew my passion for diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives by serving as an ambassador for the Student Council for Inclusive Excellence (SCIE), as well as the president of VCU’s Chapter of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA). During my time with SNMA, I created Noir Network, a mentoring database aimed at connecting our members with physicians of color for mentorship, shadowing, and research. My dedication to providing empathetic care to my patients was recognized with induction into the Gold Humanism Honor Society. My interests in psychiatry include child & adolescent psychiatry with a focus on black mental health disparities, and trauma-informed care for adolescents within systems, such as the juvenile justice system & foster system. Outside of medicine, you can find me snuggled next to my husband, catching up on my anime watch list, or enjoying some good eats (and sometimes all three at once).
