- Dr. Shakeel Shareef is a fellowship trained, board-certified ophthalmologist with over twenty years of experience in Academic Medicine involved in training over 100 eye residents and surgeons. He completed his residency training at New York Medical College followed by a two-year glaucoma fellowship at the prestigious Barnes Hospital at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO. He was promoted to the rank of Professor at the Flaum Eye Institute at the University of Rochester School of Medicine in Rochester, NY. He recently served as Director of the Glaucoma Service overseeing the Glaucoma Fellowship Program and was appointed as Professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, OH.
Dr. Shareef performs a variety of anterior segment surgeries including traditional and micro-invasive glaucoma surgeries (MIGS) and routine to complex cataract procedures, including traumatic iris and cyclodialysis cleft repair. He has been the recipient of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Achievement Award and several surgical video awards voted by his peers for his innovative work including the American Glaucoma Society Surgical Award in 2013 and the Reay of Hope video complications award at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) in 2018. As an early adopter of MIGS since 2012, he serves as the Senior Instructor for an instructional course at the annual AAO meeting. He is invited annually to several national and international meetings as a guest speaker, moderator, course instructor, and wet lab surgical instructor training ophthalmologists on the latest in surgical techniques.
