Throughout the pandemic, as a practicing infectious disease physician, Dr. Layne has cared for over 1000 patients who were hospitalized for acute SARS-CoV-2 infections and life-threatening COVID-19. He has organized major scientific studies to understand how COVID-19 attacks and destroys human lungs and also authored major publications on topics pertaining to molecular pathogenesis of COVID-19 and needs for global surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 variants.
