Summary

  • I am a physician-scientist with a growing knowledge base in endothelial dysfunction and a particular interest in microvascular thrombosis. As an Assistant Professor at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), I am dedicated to delineating disease mechanisms and discovering new treatments for thrombotic microangiopathy and other thromboinflammatory disorders in a basic science laboratory. As a pediatric hematologist at Texas Children’s Hospital, I treat patients with bleeding and clotting disorders and focus on those involving catastrophic microvascular thrombosis caused by inflammation and alternative complement pathway overactivation. The alternative complement pathway is one of three pathways within the innate immune system responsible for ridding the body of unwanted or foreign invaders, but overactivation may lead to human disease. My patients’ experiences have inspired my specific laboratory investigations, and because I know firsthand how breakthroughs in this area would improve patient morbidity and mortality, I want to pinpoint mechanisms of alternative complement pathway activation, endothelial injury, and microvascular thrombosis in thromboinflammation. I have gained technical fluency in endothelial cell functional studies in the laboratory, and with these competencies, I have elucidated mechanisms for cytokine-mediated alternative complement pathway activation by endothelial cells, detected differences in complement regulation amongst varying types of microvascular endothelial cells, discovered that patients with transplantation-associated thrombotic microangiopathy have elevated plasma levels of the alternative complement pathway activation product Ba, and linked von Willebrand factor (VWF) to the activation of the alternative complement pathway in thromboinflammation in vivo.
