Summary
- I am a physician, researcher, and educator. My roles encompass being a clinician-scientist in a major academic institution, the Associate Medical Director for a large clinical microbiology laboratory, an attending physician in infectious diseases, a Director of a core microbiology course for medical students and a scientific advisor to start-up companies.
My research interests focus on harnessing observational and experimental data to improve the diagnosis and management of infectious diseases. Specific areas of work include the development of decision support tools built over machine learning models that assist healthcare providers in a variety of tasks such as antibiotic treatments and diagnostic testing strategies. Related work includes building generalizable, data-driven testing algorithms to detect and prevent the spread of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus that causes COVID-19. My long term goal is to improve medical decision making by integrating accurate and interpretable artificial intelligence decision algorithms into clinical workflows and to use these models on a broader scale to inform public health policy. As part of my work, I collaborate with scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and the Massachusetts Senior Care Association.
Clinically, I help direct the microbiology laboratory at the Brigham & Women's Hospital and attend on the general infectious diseases consult service. I also direct HST 040, Mechanisms of Microbial Pathogenesis, which is a core course for 2nd year students in the Harvard/MIT Health Sciences and Technology program. Lastly, I am a scientific advisor to start-up companies seeking to use AI to improve diagnostics for infection and antibiotic resistance.
