He completed his medical education at Madras Medical College and further training with a residency in Surgery at Rush University Medical Center and a fellowship at the Lahey Clinic Foundation (Burlington, MA) which was in Boston at that time. He has held the position of Division Head and the founding director of Surgical Critical Care Fellowship training program at John H Stroger Jr Hospital from 1978 until 2003 and Professor and Chairman of the department of Surgery and Surgical Specialties at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, Rockford from 2003 until 2019. Dr. Appavu has expertise in Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary and endocrine surgery, specifically in thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal and endocrine pancreatic surgeries. He has contributed to several publications in Critical Care Medicine and holds fellowships with the American College of Critical Care Medicine, American College of Chest Physicians, the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada and the American College of Surgeons.
