Summary

  • I am a medical educator and general internist in the VA healthcare system. I recently served as Course Leader for the Doctoring clinical skills course at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Inspired by my clinical work with Veteran trauma survivors, I developed strategies for how to speak and behave during a physical examination to enhance patients' sense of safety, autonomy, and trust. This novel framework for 'trauma-informed physical examination' has been published and is being taught at various health care institutions around the country. My goal is to change the way we think about, perform, and teach the physical examination.
