Summary

  • Roxanne McMurray has been a practicing anesthesia provider around 30 years. She is the inventor of the McMurray Enhanced Airway (MEA) and co-founder of McMurray Medical Group. McMurray is a retired Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota.

Today’s patients often present with an increased risk of upper airway obstruction and apnea due to an abundance of redundant tissue in the distal pharynx. Patients who are obese, older or have sleep apnea are prone to distal pharyngeal tissue redundancy that contributes to airway obstruction. Mask ventilation can also present challenges, especially with patients who present with a beard or edentulism. Intraoral ventilation bypasses difficult mask variables.

Existing airway devices has not evolved significantly over the last 100 years despite changes in the distal pharynx and redundant tissue. This results in a void in contemporary airway management.

McMurray’s main goals in creating the MEA were to: 1) help keep patients breathing with ease, and 2) to address a gap in airway tools. In 2019, the McMurray Enhanced Airway (MEA) was launched by McMurray Medical Group, to provide a new multipurpose distal pharyngeal airway (DPA) device to fill the void in airway tools and meet the needs of today’s patients and providers.

The MEA’s unique design stents open the unconscious patient’s airway beyond the tongue supporting breathing, oxygenation and ventilation. The MEA is fast and easy in establishing upper airway patency to keep patients breathing—a major determinant of patient outcomes.

The MEA airway device is now used in more than 45 states in the U.S. McMurray Medical Group is an approved vendor in some of the country’s best-known healthcare facilities and academic medical centers, along with multi-clinic systems and outpatient surgery centers. Made in the U.S., the MEA is sold directly as well as through some of the nation’s leading suppliers.
