Summary
- Psychiatry, in practice, still lends to both the science and the artform of healing, the most balanced and fine-tuned dance among medical specialties. I believe a Psychiatrist ought to be more than a Psychopharmacologist, being able to focus on all three pillars of mental healthcare: Medication, Therapy, and Self-Care. While necessary to be knowledgeable of symptoms, diagnoses, treatments, and varying effects, I’ve realized it’s not sufficient since getting to know the person behind these symptoms, being able to care for the whole person, and as a natural extension, their family and community, seeing this impact in and on patients’ lives last a lifetime.
In the 13 years of providing and perfecting Telepsychiatry within some of the most underserved and rural communities in Iowa, I've managed efficient workflows and delivered effective outcomes using Biopsychosocial, Harm-reduction, Trauma-informed, and Recovery-based models, empowering self-efficacy, and self-advocacy in my patients. I’ve achieved the golden quadruple aim of better outcomes, patient satisfaction, sustainability, and provider satisfaction demonstrating it’s not only possible but also a proven evidence-based reality, and the only way forward.
Since 2022, I’ve been fortunate in being part of the most important endeavor, using my experience and skills, putting them to test by helping found the new Psychiatric Department from inception, Excelsior Springs Psychiatric Services. With phenomenal leadership, this massive undertaking has actualized and come to fruition, from hiring Care Coordinators, Psychiatric providers, Therapists, establishing Standards, Policies, practice Parameters, Guidelines to a robustly integrated model, using principles of Collaborative care, both within the hospital, and without, extending into the broader communities, laying a solid foundation of mental health care, and exemplifying best new standards in Behavioral Health Integration within this community of excellence.
