Summary
- He graduated from Temple University Medical School in 1979, completed his orthopedic internship at Bryn Mawr Hospital and returned to Temple for his Residency in Orthopedic Surgery. In 1984, he was published in the Journal of Orthopedic Surgery, with his article; “Arthroscopic Surgery for Relief of Pain in the Osteoarthritic Knee”. He was one of the first surgeons in this area to use the technique.
A graduate of Mercersburg Academy and Bucknell University, Dr. Richards was selected as “Outstanding Student Athlete” during his high school and college years. He is a member of the Franklin County and Bucknell University Athletic Halls of Fame. He received the Chambersburg YMCA Service to Youth Award in 1994 for volunteer service coaching age group divers in the area. He coached the local High School Diving Team for eight years. Dr. Robert N. Richards, Jr. has a long history as team physician at Shippensburg University, and has been an integral part of the sports medicine family at the University. His practice also covers Chambersburg High School and Penn State Mont Alto athletic teams.
During his thirty plus years of practice in the tri state area, he has served on many community and Regional Boards. In 2010, he was named the President of the Eastern Orthopaedic Association, is a current Board member and leads the EOA Jazz Band at annual meetings. He is Board certified in Orthopedic Surgery and a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, PA Orthopaedic Association, PA Medical Society, and the Hanlon Orthopaedic Society.
In the past, he has conducted Shriners Crippled Children’s Clinics, and in 2011, coordinated the first free Orthopedic Medical Clinic in Chambersburg, for patients without insurance.
He currently serves on the Chambersburg YMCA Board of Directors and is a Lector and Eucharistic Minister at his church. He and his wife, Cindy, reside in Chambersburg where they raised five children and enjoy their six grandchildren.
