Summary
- Robert Moraca, MD, is a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon with expertise in all aspects of adult cardiac surgery including coronary artery disease, mitral and aortic valve disease, minimally invasive cardiac surgery, arrhythmia surgery and mechanical circulatory support. He brings with him a special expertise in the surgical treatment of complex thoracic aortic pathology including aortic valve repair and septal myectomy for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. In addition, he has a unique experience in the multidisciplinary treatment of chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) and pulmonary thromboendarterectomy (PTE).
Currently, Dr Moraca, is the Section Head of Cardiac Surgery and Surgical Director of The Virginia Mason Heart Institute. He has returned to Virginia Mason with more 11 years of experience as an Associate Professor of Surgery at Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, PA where he served as The Director of Thoracic Aortic Surgery, The Director of the ECMO Program and the Surgical Director of the Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension (CTEPH) Program. He has been actively involved in both clinical and national research trials and is the former President of The Eastern Cardiothoracic Surgical Society (ECTSS). In addition, Dr. Moraca has over 35 peer reviewed publications an dbook chapters in cardiac surgery and has been an invited speaker at national and international meetings. Since his arrival in 2020, he has been recognized as one of Seattle's Top Doctors in 2021, 2022, 2023.
He enjoys being able to impact his patients positively during a stressful situation and is constantly inspired by his patient's courage and fortitude. Away from work he enjoys reading, skiing, biking, and spending time with his family and two dogs.
