Summary

  • Robert E. Gross, MD, PhD is the Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and New Jersey Medical School, both part of Rutgers University, which he joined in 2023. He is the Henry Rutgers Professor of Neurosurgery and also holds an appointment in the Department of Neuroscience and Cell Biology. He is an expert in the surgical treatment of epilepsy, movement disorders including Parkinson’s disease, tremor and dystonia, depression and other disorders. Previously he was at Emory University for 22 years, where he was director of the Division of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery and Vice-chair of the department, as well as director of the Emory MD/PhD program. Dr. Gross has maintained an active clinical and NIH - funded laboratory-based research program for 25 years. He has been a participant and leader of many clinical trials for epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease and depression, and is a frequent national and international lecturer and course faculty in each of these areas. Advancing medical knowledge of how neural stimulation works well—and doesn’t work well—has been the goal of Dr. Gross’ research for 25 years; his latest R01-grant–supported research seeks to understand how current neuromodulation treatments can be improved to provide better outcomes for patients with epilepsy. At Emory Dr. Gross was the co-founder and director of the Emory Neuromodulation Technology Innovation Center, or ENTICe, through which he engaged faculty in multiple disciplines across two universities to collaborate on potentially life-changing biomedical technology. At Rutgers he continues to pursue this mission as Director of the new Neurotechnology Innovation Center at Rutgers (N-TICeR) and is a member of the Brain Health Institute.
