Summary
- Dr. Robert Edelman is the William B. Graham Chair of Radiology at NorthShore University HealthSystem and Professor of Radiology at the Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University. He is recognized for seminal translational contributions in the field of MRI, including several methods for cardiovascular MR that remain in widespread clinical use. His achievements include leading an internationally recognized research group that pioneered MR angiography for imaging of the coronary arteries and dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI of myocardial perfusion, demonstrated the feasibility of cardiac-gated diffusion imaging in the human heart, helped to validate perfusion and diffusion MRI for the early diagnosis and characterization of cerebrovascular ischemia, first applied blood oxygen level dependent contrast for functional evaluation of the kidneys, and developed novel techniques for anatomic and functional MRI of the lungs, including the first description of oxygen-enhanced ventilation imaging. He is past-president and recipient of the Gold Medal of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and is a recent recipient of the Gold Medal of the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance. He has received numerous NIH grants, authored more than 350 publications in a wide range of major journals including Science, Science Advances, Nature Medicine, Lancet, and the New England Journal of Medicine, and has been repeatedly selected for Best Doctors in America, Top Doctors in Chicago, and Marquis Who's Who in America. Several of his trainees have gone on to become leaders in the fields of magnetic resonance and advanced cardiac imaging. His current research focuses on two primary areas: (1) the exploration of a novel class of steady-state MRI techniques, called unbalanced T1 Relaxation-Enhanced Steady-State (uT1RESS), for improved cancer imaging; and (2) the development and clinical validation of advanced cardiac MR imaging strategies.
