After graduating from Mercer University School of Medicine in 1996, he completed a Transitional residency at Marshall University (1996-97) before entering a Diagnostic Radiology residency at Ohio State University (1997-1999). He completed his education with a residency in Family Medicine at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center (1999-2001). Dr. Cater became a board certified in Family Medicine in 2001 and practiced in Gadsden for 3 years before joining C.A.R.E.S. in Anniston in 2004. After 15 years at C.A.R.E.S., he opened a solo practice in Anniston in December of 2019. Although he enjoyed building his private practice, he decided to join the VA as a primary care physician in November of 2024.
