Summary
- I'm a tenured Professor of Global Health and Infectious Diseases at Emory University, and currently the Chief Scientific Officer for a new non-profit that integrates large corporations and other private entities to fill gaps and augment public health responses to crises (currently the pandemic), called the Global Health Crisis Coordination Center (GHC3). Previously, I was the Director of the Emory Global Health Institute (EGHI) and Executive Director for the Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) network, funded by the BMGF. I was PI of the Gavi-funded Rotavirus Immunization Program Evaluation in Kenya (RIPEK), the BMGF-funded Global Pneumococcal Sequencing project (GPS), and the BMGF-funded Scientific Advisory Process for Optimal Research on Typhoid disease burden (SAPORT), all of which completed at the end of 2019. Since March, I am Chief Science Officer for the Global Health Crisis Coordination Center (GHC3 - globalhealthc3.org) working on COVID-19. Before joining Emory, 7 years ago, I was at CDC for 26 years where I focused on pneumonia and immunizations, including 13 years overseas, based in Bangladesh (at ICDDR,B for 4 years) and in Kenya (with the KEMRI-CDC collaboration for 9 years, including serving as Country Director and Head of the Global Disease Detection Division in Kenya). Before my overseas stints, I was Director of the National Vaccine Program Office (1995-2000) and Chief of the Epidemiology Section of the Respiratory Diseases Branch at CDC. I did my ID Fellowship at UCLA and my internal medicine residency and chief residency at UCLA San Fernando Valley Program. I am a member of the National Academy of Medicine (elected in 2017), and the American Epidemiology Society (elected in 2010), and Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), as well as of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH). Doximity doesn't ask this, but Jennifer and I have four kids who are all over the US and doing well.
