  • Richard B. North, M.D. serves as president of two charitable nonprofit organizations, the Neuromodulation Foundation (Neuromodfound.org) and the Institute of Neuromodulation (IoNeuro.org). He is a retired Professor of Neurosurgery, Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he directed the Neurosurgery Spine Service for 16 years and co-directed the Division of Functional Neurosurgery for 10 years. He received his medical degree and post-doctoral biomedical engineering and neurosurgery training at Johns Hopkins. From 1998 through 2003 he founded and served as CEO of Stimsoft, Inc., which developed patient-interactive implanted stimulator technology.

    Dr. North is certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery and the American Board of Pain Medicine. He holds a number of patents in the field of implanted electrical stimulation devices. The American Academy of Pain Medicine recognized Dr. North’s research achievements and clinical expertise with its Founders' Award in 2007, and he received Lifetime Achievement Awards from the North American Neuromodulation Society in 2009 and from the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians in 2017, and the Giant of Neuromodulation award from the International Neuromodulation Society in 2019.
