Summary
- Richard P. Marvel, M.D. received his undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore where he graduated with honors. He attended the West Virginia School of Medicine and did his Obstetrics and Gynecology residency training at Hahnemann University in Philadelphia. Over the past 20 years, he has been an attending physician at Hahnemann University School of Medicine, Medical College of Pennsylvania, the University Of Maryland School Of Medicine, and a part-time faculty member at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. While an Assistant Professor at these institutions he developed an interest and expertise in the evaluation and management of women with chronic pelvic pain and advanced Minimally Invasive Gynecologic surgery. He has served on the Board of Directors of the International Pelvic Pain Society, is a past President, and currently is on the advisory board. He has authored multiple articles and book chapters dealing with many aspects of gynecology and pelvic pain. He is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology as well as a Fellow of the American College of Surgery.
He has been directly involved in research and was a member of the Interstitial Cystitis Clinical Trials Group, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health. He is a member of the National Vulvodynia Registry, a multicenter trial enrolling patients with vulvar pain disorders.
Dr. Marvel is currently in private practice in Annapolis where he has developed the Center for Pelvic Pain at AAMC. He is Director of Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery and Pelvic Pain at the Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis Maryland. He uses an interdisciplinary approach to chronic pelvic pain working closely with physical therapists, psychologists, anesthesiologists, interventional radiologists, general surgeons, and peripheral nerve surgeons, to coordinate a multidisciplinary management of women with pelvic pain.
