He received his MD from Pontificia Bolivariana University Medical School and completed a residency in psychiatry and subspecialty training in geriatric psychiatry at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, Long and Teresa Lozano School of Medicine and Audie L. Murphy VA Medical Healthcare System. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology for Psychiatry and Geriatric Psychiatry. He is a clinical investigator at the Center for Alzheimer Research and Treatment at BWH.
Dr. Salazar’s research focuses on Alzheimer ‘s disease and cross ethnic differences in neuropsychiatric symptoms and the neuroanatomical correlation of these symptoms in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease. This work has included studies in population based samples of Mexican Americans and large observational cohorts from the Texas Alzheimer Research and Care Consortium.
He has extensive experience as a clinician, educator, and mentor of medical students, residents, and fellows from family medicine, neurology, and psychiatry during his tenure in Texas.
After his training, Dr. Salazar joined the faculty at UT Health, where he was Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, followed by his move to Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso, as founder and Division Chief of Geriatric Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences, at Tech, he was also founder director of first Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship and spearheaded several clinical, educational, and research programs with focused on Hispanic aging research and Alzheimer ‘s research.
His quest consist in inspiring new generations of clinicians, scholars, and neuroscientists to focus on augmenting Hispanic participation in cutting edge research.
