Summary
- Renée A. Shellhaas, M.D., M.S., is a Professor of Neurology and Associate Dean for Faculty Promotions & Career Development at Washington University in St. Louis, where she holds the David T. Blasingame Professorship.
Prior to moving to St. Louis, she was a Professor of Pediatrics and Associate Chair for Career Development at the University of Michigan. She has served on the Child Neurology Society Executive Committee (2015-2017), American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Neurology Executive Committee (2018-present), and is the Co-Chair of the American Epilepsy Society’s Research & Training Council. She is the President Elect of the Pediatric Epilepsy Research Foundation.
Her work on neonatal seizures – funded by foundations, NIH and PCORI – includes discoveries regarding the genetic basis of neonatal epilepsies and the optimal treatment duration after acute symptomatic neonatal seizures. Dr. Shellhaas maintains a distinct neonatal sleep research program supported by NIH and foundations and recognized by the 2020 American Academy of Neurology Sleep Research Award. This multidisciplinary team studies quantitative neonatal sleep data as predictors of neurodevelopmental outcomes and is now leading a multicenter study of sleep-disordered breathing among infants with myelomeningocele.
