Summary
- I am a board-certified intensivist. I obtained my MD degree and completed Residency in Internal Medicine, both at the University of Chile. I moved to the United States in 1986 for a research fellowship and completed a PhD degree and a fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at the Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science (RFUMS), all under the mentorship of late Professor Max Harry Weil (one of the founding fathers of Critical Care Medicine). I am currently the Section Chief of Critical Care Medicine and ICU Director at the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center. At RFUMS, I am a tenured Professor in the Departments of Clinical Science and in the Discipline of Physiology & Biophysics. I am also Director of the Resuscitation Institute at RFUMS where I lead basic and translational research in resuscitation from cardiac arrest and other low-flow states with particular focus on the role of mitochondria with past or present support from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Defense, RFUMS and affiliated institutions, pharmaceutical companies, and foundations. I have served as a member of the Basic Life Support (BLS), the Advanced Cardiac Life Support Subcommittees, and the Scientific Subcommittee of the American Heart Association Emergency Cardiovascular Care Committee. I have also served in the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) involved in the development of CPR Guidelines, and at various NIH Study Sections. I am currently a member of the Resuscitation Science Symposium organizing committee. I have contributed to the field of Resuscitation and Critical Care Medicine with more than 200 publications focused on basic and translational research in resuscitation from cardiac arrest and other low-flow states, and have received multiple awards for this research work.
