Summary
- Since 2008 I have been working on the development of novel tools for retinal imaging analysis. Initially, at the Duke University Eye Center, my focus of research was devoted to the improvement of portable optical coherence tomography (OCT). My collaboration helped our team to publish pivotal manuscripts in the area of foveal human development and retinopathy of prematurity. More importantly, we set the basis for OCT imaging in infants and neonates, opening with this, a new era in the diagnosis of pediatric retinal diseases. My work at Duke University also involved contributions to novel algorithms of OCT image segmentation and 3-D rendering of retinal images. During my training at the National Institutes of Health, I combined my previous experiences to study vessel segmentation from OCT angiography images in patients with retinitis pigmentosa. I currently direct the Retinal and Ophthalmic Genetics Imaging Lab (ROGI) at the University of Kentucky where I continue to work on novel methods of image processing that include image thresholding and deep-machine learning.
