Summary
- I am a board certified adult psychiatrist, and a training and supervising adult psychoanalyst, certified by the American Psychoanalytic Association. I work with adults and older adolescents suffering from anxiety, depression, and other painful feelings, connected with emotional struggles and dilemmas involving relationships, professional life, work, school, and other life investments and pursuits.
My practice is psychodynamic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, supplemented with other psychiatric treatment modalities, such as medication, when appropriate. My perspective is that understanding in depth in the context of intensive psychotherapy can provide a uniquely effective means of addressing many complex personal emotional issues and conflicts.
I have taught at Harvard, Tufts, and OHSU medical schools, and multiple psychoanalytic institutes. I often supervise other mental health professionals. I am chair of the Psychotherapy Department of the American Psychoanalytic Association, Director of the Oregon Psychoanalytic Institute, and ex-President of the American College of Psychoanalysts.
