- My journey after DGSOM:
Went to Seattle for a rotating internship at Harborview General Hospital followed by a year in Viet Nam as a Navy doctor with the Marines. To Hawaii for two years to finish up USNR time and then back to Seattle and U Dub for pediatric residency at Children's Orthopedic Hospital and two more years completing my fellowship in pediatric cardiology. Started working for Kaiser in Hawaii . Went back to Viet Nam with our Aloha Medical Mission group three times working in Vung Tau and Hue. We worked in country outpatient clinics and also the Hue Central Hospital even giving a cardiology talk to Hue medical students! Also got involved with the Insitut du Coeur (started by French surgeon Alain Carpentier) in Saigon and sponsored children needing open heart surgery. Spent 30 years working for the Hawaii Permanente Medical Group and then retired from full-time medical practice spending his professional time assisting with interviews for applicants to the University of Hawaii School of Medicine. In 1991, he wrote his first book , Bac-si: A Doctor Remembers Vietnam, and started his own publishing company, Taote Publishing. He now is the author of eight books, the most recent being Up to Speed on Viet Nam published in 2020.
