Summary

  • I am a board certified in neonatal/perinatal medicine. I have been a NICU director in four states (Colorado, Kansas, New Hampshire and Indiana). For the past 21 years I was director of NICU @ St. Francis Hospital and Clinical Professor of Pediatrics in the division of Neonatology at Indiana University School of Medicine/ Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. I am now a practicing member of our neonatology group at St. Francis and very much engaged in clinical and environmental research projects. Most important of these is a collaboration with Michael Skinner @ University of Washington which links our discovery of herbicides in pregnant mothers with his rodent model suggesting that such exposures can lead to transgenerational inheritance of disease through epigenetic mechanisms. The research suggests that many trends in human disease; obesity, infertility, increased incidence of diabetes, hypertension, childhood and adult cancers, immune disorders preterm birth and even declining cognitive ability can be linked to man-made environmental contaminants. My daily care of infants in NICU gives me a unique perspective on what threatens the human race at its beginning and we hope our work can lead to better preventive strategies which will enable more health pregnancies and newborn infants.
