  • Paul Stephen Thornton, M.B., B.Ch., M.R.C.P.I., is Medical Director, Distinguished Consultant of the Endocrinology/Diabetes Clinic and the Hyperinsulinism Center at Cook Children's Medical Center, in Fort Worth, Texas.

    His recent awards include the Cook Children's Clinical Scholar Award 2012-2014 and recipient of the 2012 Cook Children's Health Care System Endowed Chair Award. Dr. Thornton received a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree from University College, in Dublin, Ireland. He interned at the Mater Misericordiae Hospital, Dublin, with residencies at the Children's Hospital, Dublin, the Hospital for Sick Children Great Ormond Street, London, England, and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Dr. Thornton was a fellow in endocrinology at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He then became Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. He is board certified in Pediatric Endocrinology.

    As an expert in the evaluation and management of congenital hyperinsulinism, Dr. Thornton is frequently invited to lecture on congenital hyperinsulinism and hypoglycemia in infants and children. He has coauthored more than a dozen book chapters and over 80 journal articles. He presents his research at international and national meetings. Paul is the lead author of the
    Pediatric Endocrine Society's Recommendations and Management of Persistent Hypoglycemia in neonates, infants and children. He also leads the Pediatric Endocrine Society'​s Rare Disease working group on hyperinsulinism and is the senior Author on the International guidelines for the diagnosis and management of hyperinsulinism.

    Dr. Thornton is a member of the Pediatric Endocrine Society, Society for Pediatric Research and The Endocrinology Society.​​​
