Summary
- I am currently the Chief of Palliative and Supportive Care at Grady Memorial Hospital and Associate Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine and the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine, Division of Palliative Medicine at the Emory University School of Medicine. I have been a committed teacher in Emergency Medicine since completing training at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, IL. With a strong interest in improving the care of patients with serious illness in the emergency department, I completed a fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. In 2008, I became the first (to my knowlege) physician in the nation to have been trained and board certified in both Emergency Medicine and Hospice in Palliative Medicine. My academic focus is the integration of palliative medicine skills in emergency medicine practice. Additional interests include preserving the opportunity for organ donation in end of life situations and improving physician communication skills.
I teach in the NCI sponsored Education in Palliative and End of Life Care–Emergency Medicine (EPEC-EM) Project, and I am the editor of the Oxford University Press book “Palliative Aspects of Emergency Care.”
As a recent alumnus (2020-2021) and faculty (2021-2022) of the Harvard Macy Institute Art-Museum-based Health Professions Education Fellowship and having completed (2023) a related Advanced Visual Thinking Strategies program, I apply these innovative pedagogies for HPM Fellows, faculty, and interdisciplinary teams.
