Summary
- From 1991 till mid 2010 I was affiliated with the Department of Neurology of the University of Southern California. As an associate professor of clinical neurology, I was co-director of the Neuroimmunology Service of the Department of Neurology, and director of the USC Multiple Sclerosis Research Group at the Keck School of Medicine, overseeing the clinical research activities and leading the disease management aspects of the Center's mission. I did investigator-initiated research and served as a Principal Investigator in multi-center Phase II, III, and IV clinical trials. My research has primarily been in mechanisms of autoimmune tolerance. A sabbatical in 2008 allowed me to review some of the fundamentals of my work, and, although it was difficult to do so, I left my clinical practice in order to pursue these areas further. My clinical interests continue to include MS, autoimmunity and immune-CNS interactions. But as will be obvious from my publication list, I am pursuing questions of medical ethics and the philosophy and psychology of medicine, the Big Questions, and as well, the Jewish response to them. I served as CMO for Glycominds, Inc., and now the same with Kepler Diagnostics, developing biomarker panels for use in MS diagnosis and treatment. I also took over the family avocado ranching business, and grow 4-8Million pounds annually in Valley Center, CA.
