Summary
- I am a Surgical Oncologist and Chief, Section of Surgical Oncology at the Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center in Jacksonville, Florida. In this new role, I am helping to build a group devoted to the multidisciplinary care of all cancer patients in North Florida and beyond.
My clinical practice involves oncologic surgery for gastrointestinal tract, hepato-pancreato-biliary, adrenal, skin, and soft tissue malignancies, with a primary focus on diseases of the liver, pancreas, and bile ducts and upper GI tract.
I am formerly Professor with Tenure in the Departments of Surgery, Medicine, and Public Health Sciences at the Penn State College of Medicine (2007-2020). I served as Director of the multidisciplinary Program for Liver, Pancreas, and Foregut Tumors, as well as the Co-Medical Director for Outpatient Services within the Penn State Cancer Institute and the Section of Surgical Oncology.
My active current focus of research involves the role of physical activity and prehabilitation in the outcomes of patients undergoing gastrointestinal cancer surgery and in cancer survivors.
I have authored or co-authored over 85 peer-reviewed publications and numerous book chapters and invited manuscripts. I serve on the Editorial Boards for the Journal of Surgical Research (Social Media Editor), and the Annals of Surgical Oncology (Social Media, Associate Editor), and as a reviewer for multiple other surgical and oncology journals. I am active in the American College of Surgeons (ACS), the Association for Academic Surgery (AAS), the Society of University Surgeons (SUS), the Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO), and the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT).
I have an active presence on Twitter (@NirajGusani) with over 12,500 followers and am a leader in helping other surgeons learn to harness new media and social media for professional use and patient/professional education.
