- Dr. Nikhil Pai is an Associate Professor in the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology at McMaster Children’s Hospital. He completed medical school at McMaster University, his pediatric residency at the Hospital for Sick Children (University of Toronto), and his pediatric gastroenterology fellowship at Boston Children's Hospital (Harvard Medical School). He is the Medical Lead of the Complex Pediatric Nutrition Service at McMaster Children's Hospital, and is the Medical Lead of the Pediatric Intestinal Failure program.
His research program focuses on the role of the intestinal microbiome in pediatric inflammatory bowel disease, particularly through the application of fecal microbiota transplantation. He is principal investigator of the PediCRaFT Trial (Pediatric Crohn's Disease Fecal Microbiota Transplant). His research expertise is in clinical, and basic science studies of host-microbial interactions. His lab supports a medium-sized team of trainees and research staff, actively publishes in peer-reviewed journals, and receives support from institutional and federal grants.
Dr. Pai is an active clinician-educator within the Department of Pediatrics, and trains medical students, pediatric residents, and fellows through his busy pediatric gastroenterology inpatient, outpatient and endoscopy practice. He is an Associate Faculty Member of McMaster University's Farncombe Family Digestive Diseases Research Institute, and the Centre for Metabolism, Obesity and Diabetes Research (MODR). His administrative work includes serving as Co-Chair of McMaster Children's Hospital's Pediatric Nutrition Advisory Commmittee, member of the Canadian Pediatric Malnutrition Task Force, and Academic Editor of PLOS One.
